jen plays critic in this very special epsiode of "dirty thirties"

2006-01-24 / 3:17 a.m.
for this entry, i thought i would stray away from sex talk, largely because i'm not a pornographer. in my dreams perhaps, but not now--i'm a hopeless critic.

and these days, it's REALLY hard to find intelligent television-(and YES tv is not evil, the television told me so)i would feel like a turd sandwich if i DIDN'T tell all five of my readers about the shows i've stumbled upon. they are as follows:

"the boondocks"- on the cartoon network's 'adult swim' program. you have to stay up late to watch it, but if you have tivo, you can catch it later. this show is based on a long running comic that i didn't know existed. y'see, i quit reading the comics when the far side retired. this cartoon is about two brothers (literally and blackly) riley and huey who live with their grandpa in suburbia. my favorite character is huey, who seems to have a love/hate relationship with his own people, something i can identify with a great deal. the martin luther king episode was the most phenomenal thing i have seen in years, and what i adore most about this show is the humor is cutting, and sometimes there isn't a happy ending or resolve. if you tune into this program thinking you might encounter something like "the proud family", "the cosby show", "the fresh prince of bel-air", or "fat albert" you will surely be disappointed. this show kicks every black culturally focused show in existence's ass. it bitch slaps the shit out of it!

"my name is earl" on NBC is divine. the character of randy played by ethan suplee is one of my new additions to my extensive 'nerd crush' list. sure the tone of the show seems to be heavily marinated in 12-step ideology, but since i'm a recovering person, i find the approach refreshing rather than preachy. the idea that 'earl' thinks carson daily INVENTED karma is absolutely hysterical. my two favorite episodes: the one where earl fakes his own death and the recent one where earl temps at a fast food restaurant with THE mr. faverau, who seems to have returned to his 'gutter' weight. tangent time: i love it when actors and actresses fatten back up, seriously. this whole celebrity wasting syndrome depresses the shit out of me. i'm a fat assed bitch and i need me some fat assed bad assed role models, because i'm sick of looking at people who have had gastric bypass surgery or what the fuck ever, looking like they've ingested a tapeworm. end of rant. back to "earl": great show, if you haven't seen it. if you were turned off, please give it another chance.

"robot chicken" sure, i'm annoyed new episodes haven't come out, but you can't rush the perfection that seth green (yummy nerd crush) and matt seinrich has to offer. this short stop-animation is also on the 'adult swim' line up on the cartoon network.

when i'm driving around listening to music, i've been listening to old Kink's albums: "arthur", "lola...", "village green..." (Muswell Hillbillies is my fav), Mary Timony (golden dove), and wEEn mixes.
vin found a person who has taken the time to write extensively on the genius that is known as wEEn. if you're a fan or just curious about their music, give this a read:

WARNING: the dude is long winded, so don't be reading it at work. wait until you have some time to kill, like let's say--you work the night shift like me.

(((transition)))) i'm finally getting used to being up all night and sl
eeping all day. when i first get up i feel like a zombie, but i get my second wind around midnight. instead of guzzling java all night long, i have taken a liking to working out really hard for about 40mins to an hour. the hardest time of night (between 2 and 4am) isn't such a bitch anymore.

art wise, i'm gonna start going back to working on the book. i'd like to get my stuff to the vanity press by late spring. i also have submissions to get ready for the second edition of the matrix anthology, which is due in another month or so. matrix is a literary group in bloomington that i belong to, and you can check it out here:

a few pieces of mine is in the current issue, so YES--you should buy it. yes, that was a shameless plug.
